Creating transparency on carbon emissions and translating these insights into
action is becoming increasingly important and financially relevant, given the ambition to decarbonize
and the need to comply with new regulations, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting
Directive (CSRD) or the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Across industries, Scope 3 emissions often make up the large majority of total GHG
emissions and a large percentage of that is contributed by purchasing input goods or
services and the processing of sold products. To tackle Scope 3 emissions,
organizations need to rethink how their products are designed, engineered, and
used, and engage along their value chain e.g. with suppliers and customers, to
unearth approaches to more sustainable sourcing—including securing access
to sustainable materials as well as increasing transparency on tier-n suppliers’
carbon footprints.
